Adult Prosthetics

The purpose in adult orthotics is to safely provide a replacement for the arm or leg that has been removed. The amputation may have happened because of an accident or trauma. Or the amputation may have been necessary as a life saving act to protect from advancing disease process such as diabetes or bone disease.

All prostheses are considered custom  applications. The components include a socket for the remaining arm or leg and attachment of suspension, and adding either an elbow and/or hand for an arm  or adding a knee and/or foot for a leg.

Prosthetics are designed to return a person to the functional level of activity that each person aspires to continue for their lifetime.

Consideration is given for the condition of the residual limb that remains. The joints that are inside a prosthesis and the joints above also require consideration to design a prosthesis that will serve a person the best.

Prosthetic Arms

An arm will have the following components  and considerations toward design and compatability:

Socket design

Suspension

Body powered versus Electronic powered

Elbow selection

hand selection or terminal device

Cosmetics

Prosthetic Legs

Many prosthetic legs are designed for the purpose of safe transfer and only a few steps inside a home or for visiting medical or social environments outside the home. Other prosthetic legs are designed for much higher functions including daily work schedules, negotiating difficult terrains, or for high level physical competition.

Components  for any prosthesis, arm or leg are divided into functional activity levels

These levels are assessed to have an agreed  level of personal activity that each prosthetic candidate can exhibit and endure.

Level One:

Level Two:

Level Three:

Level Four:

Prosthetic legs also have the same design considerations as for arms:

Socket design

Suspension

Body powered versus Electronic powered

Knee selection

foot selection or activity specific
